What Is Ozokerafin and What Is It Used For?
Ozokerafin is a blend of ozokerite and paraffin designed for local heat applications. Both components are of petroleum origin and retain heat effectively, which is why paraffin with ozokerite is used as a heat carrier in physiotherapy, rehabilitation, health-resort treatments and heat therapy at home.
The combination of low thermal conductivity and high heat capacity allows the heated mixture to release accumulated heat gradually. This provides prolonged and even warming of the tissues in the application area.
Ozokerafin can be applied locally to the joints, muscles, back, hands, feet and other areas of the body.
How Do Ozokerafin Heat Applications Work?
The procedure is based on prolonged local heat exposure. Warming the tissues promotes dilation of superficial blood vessels and supports local blood circulation, helps relax tense muscles and creates favorable conditions for recovery processes.
Ozokerafin applications are used for:
- prolonged and even local warming;
- muscle relaxation;
- supporting local blood circulation;
- reducing muscle spasms and stiffness;
- reducing pain and discomfort;
- supporting tissue recovery after physical strain and injuries;
- preparing tissues for certain rehabilitation procedures.
Ozokerafin for Joints, Muscles and Back
Heat applications with ozokerafin may be used as part of comprehensive physiotherapy and rehabilitation programs for chronic and subacute conditions when local heat therapy is not contraindicated.
Common areas of use include:
- joints and spine: arthritis outside the acute stage, osteoarthritis, osteochondrosis, contractures and joint stiffness;
- muscles and ligaments: myositis, muscle tension and certain consequences of sprains, bruises and other injuries;
- peripheral nervous system: neuritis, neuralgia, radiculopathy and certain consequences of peripheral nerve injuries;
- rehabilitation after injuries: as part of comprehensive programs aimed at restoring musculoskeletal function;
- gynecology and urology: local heat procedures may be included in certain physiotherapy programs when prescribed by a healthcare professional.
Ozokerafin is not a substitute for the primary treatment of a medical condition. In the presence of chronic diseases, serious injuries, neurological conditions or vascular disorders, the suitability of heat therapy should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
What Can Ozokerafin Be Combined With?
Ozokerafin can be used as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program together with therapeutic exercise, massage and other physiotherapy or balneotherapy procedures.
Heat applications may be incorporated into programs that include therapeutic baths and showers, therapeutic mud treatments, sea bathing and certain forms of physical therapy.
An interval of 1–2 hours between different procedures is recommended unless another regimen has been prescribed by a healthcare professional or physical therapist.
Ozokerafin: Instructions for Use
Before the procedure, melt the ozokerafin in a water bath.
Layering Method
Apply melted ozokerafin at 55–60 °C to the skin with a flat brush in several layers. After application, cover the area with compress paper and insulate it to retain heat.
Ozokerafin Bath for Hands and Feet
After applying the initial layer, place the hand or foot into an oilcloth bag containing melted ozokerafin at 60–65 °C.
This method is suitable for local heat applications to the hands and feet.
Gauze Application Method
Apply pads made of 8–10 layers of gauze soaked in melted ozokerafin that has begun to cool.
Place additional pads soaked in warmer ozokerafin at 65–70 °C over them, then cover the area with oilcloth and insulate it.
Tray Application Method
Pour melted ozokerafin into a tray approximately 5 cm deep lined with medical oilcloth.
Once the mixture has cooled to 50–54 °C, remove the formed application together with the oilcloth, place it on the required area of the body and insulate it.
Procedure duration: 30–60 minutes.
Frequency: daily or every other day.
Course: 15–20 procedures.
Repeat course: after 3–4 months following consultation with a healthcare professional.
How to Heat Ozokerafin Safely
For heat applications, it is important to consider not only the temperature of the entire melted mixture but also the temperature of the layer that comes into direct contact with the skin.
The contact layer should be approximately 50–55 °C. This allows the heat-retaining properties of ozokerafin to be used while reducing the risk of thermal burns.
Do not apply excessively hot ozokerafin directly to the skin.
Before first use, it is recommended to check individual tolerance to the product components.
Can Ozokerafin Be Reused?
Yes. Ozokerafin can be reused.
Before the next procedure, heat the previously used mixture to 90–100 °C for 30–40 minutes and add up to 20% fresh ozokerafin.
Used ozokerafin can be cleaned while melted by filtering it through 2–3 layers of gauze.
If the mixture becomes brittle or crumbly after repeated use, petroleum jelly oil may be added.
Ozokerafin: Contraindications and Precautions
Do not use in case of individual sensitivity to ozokerite, paraffin or other product components.
Heat procedures are contraindicated in acute inflammatory and infectious conditions, severe atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, liver cirrhosis, thyrotoxicosis, certain tumors and cysts, progressive diseases of the nervous system and other conditions in which local heat therapy is contraindicated.
During pregnancy and breastfeeding, as well as in the presence of cardiovascular, neurological or other chronic medical conditions, consult a healthcare professional before use.
How to Store Ozokerafin
Store in the original packaging in a dry place protected from direct light and out of reach of children at a temperature not exceeding 25 °C.
